Prostate cancer

Some facts

Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of male cancers. It is the second cause of mortality by cancer, after lung cancer.

30% of men aged 50 and more already show some cancer signs.

There are certain risk factors such as race, age, family history of prostate cancer, smoking, diet high in animal fat or meat.

What are the symptoms ?

At an early stage, none. Therefore,  prevention is important.

The volume increase of the prostate, whether it is benign or malignant, shows the following symptoms:

If spontaneous loss of weight and tiredness occur, an examination shoud be done without any further delay.

When should one undergo a prostate examination ?

Normally, from 50 years onwards. For patients with a high level of risk factors, from 45 years onwards.

In any case, a doctor should be consulted if any of the mentioned symptoms appears, whatever your age.

It is possible to detect the prostate cancer in its early stages of evolution and hence reinforce the chances of total recovery.

In practice:

The doctor can screen the illness before the development of the symptoms, using the following methods: clinical examination, echography and/or blood test for Prostate-Specific-Antigen (PSA level).

In case of difficulties to urinate, a prostate echography can give valuable information (prostate volume, density, homogeneousness). It can be redone several times to evaluate the evolution of the prostate size.

Our Centre has all the necessary equipment to conduct a full check-up for prostate cancer prevention.

All you need to do is to make an appointment via our secretariat

(tel: 02 648 39 97 - fax: 02 646 69 73 - email: vanlaerv@gmail.com).

The echographic examination takes about 20 minutes and can normally be conducted during the week you called for the appointment.

The results are being communicated to your doctor the day of the examination.
