EMDR :
A first-rate method for the treatment of
PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAUMAS
What is EMDR ?
EMDR stands for « Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing ». It is a new technique actually utilised by an increasing number of psychotherapists for the treatment of psychological traumas. This therapeutic method has been discovered in the late eighties by Ms Francine Shapiro, an American Doctor in Psychology. Since then, many scientists have studied, improved the method and have proved its efficiency, especially for treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorders.
How can EMDR help you ?
It can treat traumas such as :
v Road accidents
v Aggressions
v Psychological harassment
v Repetitive traumas going back to childhood : negligence, abuse etc…
v Complicated bereavement
v Eating disorders etc.
The advantage of the method lies in the fact that EMDR is a fast and efficient way of working : a « simple » trauma can often be resolved in three sessions.
Studies made show that 84 to 90% of the people having suffered traumatic events or situations such as rape, an accident, or any other type of aggression do not present any symptoms anymore after an EMDR treatment. One must also know that these results are lasting.
How does it work ?
Based on our actual knowledge, it appears that traumatic events are stored as such in our memory with their associated images, sounds, thoughts, bodily sensations and emotions..
EMDR allows the organism to assimilate, to « digest » the mnemonic tracks of the trauma(s).
The memory of the traumatic experience softens and the negative emotional weight attached to it is somehow dissolved, annihilated.
The past becomes a memory and enters the personal biography next to the other life events.
The processes activated by the EMDR technique can be assimilated to those occurring every night during the paradoxical sleep (Rapid Eye Movement).
